Christina stepped off the plane onto the hot, steamy tarmac at Kinshasa International Airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She had come a long way from being a farmer’s daughter. She definitely wasn’t in Kansas anymore. After serving her country in one of America’s forever wars, she decided to leave the Navy as an E-7, master chief petty officer and take a job in the private sector. She had been courted by several private security firms and clandestine agencies, but after long thought, she went to work for a company called, Black Oak. She took the job because of their mission statement:
At Black Oak, we operate in the shadows to bring justice to those who cannot fight for themselves. Our mission is to rescue kidnapping victims, eradicate corruption, and expose the truth, no matter the cost. We serve as the unwavering guardians of freedom, operating both domestically and abroad. Using every resource at our disposal, we strike at the heart of darkness to restore hope, security, and transparency. Our commitment is to stand as the last line of defense for the innocent, bringing light into the darkest corners of the world.
Her first mission was presented to her in stages. All she knew so far was where she was to meet a man who’d give her the next piece of the puzzle. As she waited for her bag to come down the belt in baggage claim, a tall thin black man approached her with a newspaper under her arm.
“Sure, is muggy, today,” said the man wearing thick rimmed dark sunglasses.
“Yeah, it’s a hot one. I read they are expecting rain,” she replied.
The code sentences were correct, and the man placed the folded newspaper on the edge of the baggage belt and walked away. Christina picked it up and tucked it under her arm just as her blue Samsonite came into view. She pulled it off the belt and proceeded to the bathroom. Once in the stall, she opened the newspaper, and inside written in permanent marker, was an address: Hôtel Indigo, J95G+477, Kinshasa, Congo – Kinshasa, room 8, and instructions to knock five times and wait for three return knocks before entering. She memorized the location, ripped the page from the newspaper, and flushed it. After placing the remainder of the newspaper in the bathroom trash bin, she proceeded to the curb to find a taxi.
“Hôtel Indigo, please,” said Christina.
